Descriptions and directory of services provided by timber framed houses dealers and builders. Timber framing is a specialty building trade and requires knowledge specific to the craft of timber framing. And each timber frame builder or dealer offers services that may be a little different from the others. One key factor to consider is that many, if not most, timber frame companies will only fabricate and erect the frame. You'll need to find someone else to complete your structure. Some companies offer a "modern" frame, using a state-of-the-art CNC machine to cut the frame. Others follow traditional methods and do most of the work by hand. Some companies only work with certain types of wood, such as douglas fir or white pine.
Another factor to consider is the geographic area that the company will work in. In other words, do they serve the area where you want to build? While the use of SIPS in "wrapping" (forming the exterior walls) a timber frame home is very popular, some companies have other methods of completing the exterior of your frame. For example, they may frame their own panels using 2" by 4" or 6" lumber and inserting fiberglass batt insulation or styrofoam sheets, or a combination of both. The resulting "R" value may be similar to a SIP, but the assembly may not perform the same over the long haul. That’s why you need to ask questions about the services provided and what will be included in your timber frame package.
